According to our recently-published Reno-Report,
bathroom renovations are at the top of home improvement wish lists across Canada. We also learned that a bathroom renovation in Canada will typically cost between $7,785 and $19,338, with the average homeowner spending $13,400. While these numbers are a useful ballpark, when it comes to setting a budget for your project, you’ll want to break it down by component. From floors to lighting and toilets, here’s a baseline for how much each part of your bathroom renovation will cost.
Bathtub Installation: $1,179 – $2,490
When budgeting for your bathroom renovation, you should decide early on whether or not you’re going to install a new bathtub. This part of the project can significantly increase the cost of your renovation. The price of installing a new bathtub can be broken down into three separate costs: the cost of materials, the cost of labour, and the cost of removal and disposal. On average, materials (ie. your new tub), will cost between $525 and $1,130. Labour will be almost equally expensive – you can expect to pay between $589 and $789 for installation. If you have a pre-existing tub you’d like removed, it will likely cost between $65 and $393 dollars. Altogether, this brings the total cost of purchasing and installing your new tub to between $1,179 and $2,490. It may seem pricey, but there’s nothing like relaxing in a bubble bath after a long day.
Countertop Installation: $203 – $1,546
Whether you’re investing in a new vanity or just replacing your countertops, there are tons of countertop materials to choose from at a range of different price points. New countertops will cost you anywhere between $200 and $1,546. Material for this project will cost between $131 and $1,310. Labour and removal will be relatively inexpensive for this portion of the project, costing you between $65 and $196 and $6 to $39, respectively.
Flooring: $576 – $1,808
Your next step is to consider flooring for your new bathroom. Like countertops, there’s no shortage of budget-friendly flooring options
. With so many affordable options on the market, the cost of material for this part of your project should only be between $78 and $170. The installation will be somewhat more expensive, costing between $458 and $851. Depending on the material you decide on, you might also be charged for removal – anywhere between $39 and $786 is standard. Keep in mind that whatever material you choose will need to be water-resistant and you’ll want to pay for professional installation to ensure the inner layers of your floor aren’t damaged by moisture. Lighting: $268 – $458
If you’re looking for a relatively inexpensive way to transform the look and feel of your space, lighting is the way to go. Whether you choose to update your lights as a part of a larger reno or as its own mini-project, on average it will cost between $268 – $458 to switch up your bathroom lights.Unless you’re purchasing a statement fixture for your bathroom, the labour will be the most expensive aspect of your project. It may be cheaper to do it yourself, but unless you’re simply changing a few lightbulbs, we recommend leaving the installation to a licenced electrician.
Shower Installation: $956 – $1,310
Deciding on a design for your new shower is an important step in your project. Prefabricated or custom? Pivot or sliding doors? Glass or plastic? There are a lot of factors that go into the look (and cost) of your shower. On average, however, the materials will cost anywhere between $300 and well over $1,000.Depending on the complexity of your project, the cost of labour could cost as little as $400 or as much as $5,000. Whatever you decide on, don’t be afraid to invest in a luxurious shower. Not only will you get to enjoy this part of your bathroom every single day, but when it comes time to sell your home, you’re also likely to make your money back.
Sink Installation: $415 – $695
On average, homeowners pay between $415 and $695 for a new bathroom sink. This cost is likely to increase if you decide to go with a double vanity. While materials will only cost you between 100 and 200 dollars, it will be slightly more expensive to have a plumber come by to install it. Labour for this project will cost between $300 and $350 and, unless you’re super handy with a wrench, you’ll need the help of a plumber.
Toilet Installation: $602 – $1,271
Last but certainly not least, unless you’re planning on making do with your old one, you’ll need to account for the cost of a new toilet. The toilet itself will cost between $130 and $655 plus between $150 and $457 for installation. There is always the option of keeping your old toilet and having it repositioned (it if you’re planning on changing your bathroom’s layout), in which case you’ll only pay for the cost of a plumber. Now that you have a solid understanding of the costs involved in your bathroom project, you’re ready to start getting quotes.
